Frequently Asked Questions
Unlike the GLCSL Rec league there are no GVSA rules that require a coach to ensure players are on the field for a minimum amount of time.
This is typical for select and higher level teams (including High School). In fact coaches may legitimately accept players specifically for reserve positions on a team. Such reserve players may find they have minimal or no time on the field during a game.
Be sure to check expectations with your select coach before you accept an offer of a position on any select team in or outside of RPYSC.
Although GVSA and RPYSC reminds coaches that select level play continues to be a skill development level we have no control over the field time choices a coach may make.
Absolutely! Attending tryouts and the potential placement on a RPYSC select team is optional. We will continue to register many recreational players and create RPYSC recreational teams at all age levels within RPYSC (U6-U8) and the Great Lakes Coed Soccer League (U10+).
Attending tryouts and placing on a RPYSC select team is a growth opportunity for players who would like to take their soccer skills to the next level. Player and parents need to balance the opportunity for growth with the increased commitment and player interest.
Recognizing the current challenges in the economy and the impact on our area, RPYSC is working to minimize the cost of our select program. We work hard to ensure our rec program is one of the most cost competitive programs in the area (compare our registration and equipment costs to neighboring soccer clubs and other sports). We plan to do the same for our select program.
Tryouts for the Fall 2011 select season will be held in June:
| June 20th | U11, U12 | |
| June 21st |
U13, U14 | |
| June 22nd |
U9, U10, U15/16*, U17/18/19* | |
| June 29th | Make up date for all ages |
Registration will start at 5:30pm.
Tryouts will start at 6pm and complete by 8pm.
The GVSA league allows players to play up a maximum of two age groups. Consider this when attending tryouts - players may wish to tryout for more than one age group depending on their ability.
* Please note the U15+ boys teams play for the spring season and the U15+ girls teams for the fall season. This is because the older age group players usually play on a High School team during the Fall (boys) or Spring (girls). While older Girls' teams suspend play during the Spring, they may wish to play again in the summer, after High School season ends, in a tournament. This is permissible per GVSA rules.
We will begin sending invitations to play on RPYSC select teams starting June 22nd. This is the first day players are allowed to accept offers for GVSA teams.
We will return to our RPMS home fields for Tryouts in 2011.
Registration for RPYSC Select teams involves a higher cost commitment compared to recreational teams. This is driven by higher league registration fees, uniforms (home and away colors are required), tournament fees and travel costs, etc. However we want to make RPYSC Select registration costs as accessible as possible. Our mission is to enable all area youth to develop their soccer skills. You will see that the costs described below are very competitive with neighboring select clubs.
Our annual registration cost for the RPYSC Select program was $180 for the 2010/11 season. We do expect some minor increase for the 2011/12 season to cover increasing league and ref fees. Our exact costs have yet to be finalized. We will update this page when we have final 2011/12 registration costs.
Registration cost includes:
- GVSA league registration fees
- Referee fees
- Insurance while practicing and playing on RPYSC fields
- Access to RPYSC fields for practice and home games
- Field maintenance; nets, line marking, re-seeding etc.
- Licence fees for coaches committing to RPYSC select
- MSYSA Risk management fees
- One tournament fee per year!
The registration fee is payable in two installments; 50% is due with your registration form when you accept an invitation to play on a RPYSC select team. The remaining 50% is due before your first game in the fall season. Registration fees are non-refundable with the exception of extenuating circumstances approved by the RPYSC board.
Individual coaches may expect their teams to attend additional tournaments, clinics and indoor soccer sessions during the winter. These team specific expectations will be communicated with your invitation to play on a team after tryouts. You will have the opportuntity to review and agree to these team specific requirements before submitting your registration form after tryouts.
Team parents, players and coaches may optionally elect to purchase additional accessories at their cost, such as player back packs, sweat shirts etc. Just For Kicks in Muskegon, offers a wide range of accessories and can personalize them with the RPYSC logo, player number or team name.
Uniforms will be extra. The standard RPYSC green jersey will be used for away games. These will cost $25. A special select white home uniform package (jersey, shorts, socks) will be available for purchase from Just For Kicks. We expect total home and away, uniform cost to be under $100 depending on the options (eg extra socks, shorts etc) you choose.
Miscellaneous league fees such as lost player cards and transfer requests will be extra. These fees are not common and will charged to a player on the rare occasions they are incurred.
There is no cost for tryouts.
In fact, we encourage all players to tryout for RPYSC Select. Regardless of acceptance on to a Select team this will be a valuable experience for players of all abilities.
Be prepared to demonstrate your best at all times during the tryout session. Come prepared as you would for a game (cleats, shin guards, water and appropriate ball), but don't wear RPYSC colors.
Although your soccer skills on the field are obviously important, evaluators will also be looking for examples of good sportsmanship, ethics, communication with your fellow players, coaches and officials. We will be looking for players who are willing to listen and grow. You can improve your chances for selection if you can demonstrate your ability to play in more than one position.
There are a lot of useful guides on the internet to help a player understand what is expected at a tryout.
Here are some links:

If possible, consider these guidelines as you play during the season leading up to tryouts. Talk to your current coach about your strengths and areas where you can improve. Practice and plan to have fun at tryouts!
RPYSC requires all players to participate in structured tryouts in June. Each player will be individually evaluated based on their skills, sportsmanship, ethics and committment to the team including fellow players, coaches and officials.
Acceptance on to teams will be made only through these tryout evaluations. No whole teams will be accepted.
Select (or travel) soccer is an opportunity for recreational soccer players to continue the growth of their soccers skills in an increasingly competitive environment while still placing an emphasis on development. As the name implies, players are selected annually for teams based on the abilities they demonstrate in structured try-outs. Try-outs are scheduled in June for teams expecting to start play in the fall. All players try-out every year regardless of whether they have played on a select team before.
Select teams typically travel farther than recreation level teams. The GVSA league area is larger than the GLCSL area. Select teams are also likely to register for one or more tournaments which may require travel outside of our normal playing area (possibly requiring overnight stays).
Players within select teams will be expected to dedicate a greater amount of time to organized practice compared to recreational soccer. Clubs within the GVSA League also cover a wider geographical region than GLCSL so travel distances for away games will increase.
Players will be expected to commit to a minimum of two practices per week (2hrs) and a GVSA eight weekend game schedule. Of the eight games, four will be away games within the GVSA club area.
Commitment to a select team is for both fall and spring seasons for all players age U14 and below.
All area players are welcome to tryout for RPYSC Select teams.
Although our club name reflects our geographic location we have many players from neighboring school districts participate within our club.
Our goal is to make the RPYSC Select program as accessible as possible by keeping costs as low as possible.
RPYSC Select teams participate in the Grand Valley Soccer Association (GVSA). GVSA schedules our select games and sets the rules for their league. Please see our rules page for more information and the GVSA web site.
